It has miraculously survived despite everything, including a bombing. Scientists and others have tried to dispel or explain it in an earthly way but have failed. The tilma sits in all its unexplained majesty, framed in gold and silver on that site in Mexico City today. An unexplained miracle in the form of a woman falls into an inviting place in my book, no doubt a destination worth seeking. I have visited the tilma many times. Each is more powerful than the last. Each is more meaningful as it strengthens my connection with the idea that the universe sends love beyond those ideas that we see in mainstream America and that my connection to the universe can be through feminine energy, not masculine. The concept of connecting to a solely feminine deity, an embodiment for my eyes to see of mother earth, of Pachamama, Tonantzin–whatever you want to call her, cannot be replicated. My subconscious, past traumas, and daily life as a woman in American society tell me I am not good enough; I have to work harder and be everything to everyone. And even with all my personal and spiritual work, those messages get through sometimes, seeping into me like cancer, eating away at all the good. I am not good enough. I have fallen short. I am failing as a mom and a woman leader. And at times, even with her image present in my life in so many spaces, the veil remains in front of me. I cannot see the beauty and grace before me. On my most recent trip to Teo, she reminded me that even when I think I don’t deserve it, she is there to remind me it is accessible to us all. It is easy to forget, even deep in healing and growth. As I leaned on the register counter, looking at the wall with the prominent Guadalupe painting and the other paintings of men surrounding her, I looked at Emily. “Wait, Guadalupe… is… she… available…. too?” I slowly got the words out. “Yes, she is. You know she is always accessible to you,” Emily responded lovingly with a big smile. My eyes welled with gigantic tears. I could feel myself almost floating in tears, providing a safe bubble to transport me closer to her love. All the while, I started laughing out loud. It hit right to the core of my fear. My fear about writing my story and sharing it was not so much about what people would say about the sorted details, the judgmental assumptions, or just statements that could be thrown at me. I have run for and served in public office; those things have been commonplace in my life. What scared me most was that my story wouldn’t matter, that it would seem an overshare, presumptuous, trite, or irrelevant. The comment was every fear wrapped into one statement: The details of my story didn’t matter. And I will live my life like my story does matter, and so should you—a messy work in progress, more than the exterior front that I poorly presented for years. As I thought more about the comment, it strikes something more profound in our society; we are not allowed to not have it all together. And I am calling bull shit. Just the other day, I was reminded of what beautiful imperfections are all about and how despite the critics forging on was what matters. After a career that fueled her addiction to success and other things, life was dark, and something had to change. Forced to take a step back, she re-evaluated her priorities and started fresh in many ways. Now she lives with a freedom to be herself and know how far from perfect she is. As an imperfect mother of two, she sometimes says bad words, frequently forgets to pack snacks for preschool, and on occasion, her kids eat popsicles for breakfast. But she knows she is doing the best she can, and that is all people can do on their journey. She had a whole lot of traumas early in life that made the middle part tough. But through an intense spiritual awakening, a reevaluation of priorities, and kicking a few addictions, Leah has confronted her trauma, found a way to pull herself out of the depths of sadness, and finds herself on a lifelong journey to build a self-advocacy campaign to constantly find fantastic joy. Leah grew up in Loveland, Colorado, and has an undergraduate degree from Boston University, and half of a master’s degree in Public Policy and Administration from Northwestern University (because, well, sometimes you just don’t finish things). She has had a 20-year career in campaign politics and public affairs. DAY 4.- Pachamanca and Hot Air Balloon Today, we will interact with local women and learn the sacred art of Purvian cooking. Along the way, we will have spectacular views of the surrounding mountains; once you arrive at the Sun Gate, you’ll have the first view of Machupicchu, still from far away, and after 40 minutes, we will arrive at Machupicchu to enjoy the sunset.
